| Henry set about restoring royal authority after he won the crown by civil war. His first
big spectacle was the customary procession from the Tower to Westminster for his coronation. The next day a coronation
banquet was held in the Great Hall of the White Tower. |
| As with other Kings before him, he used the Tower for two purposes; as a royal residence
and as a state prison. |
| Henry VII held many banquets in the Great Hall and even held a tournament on the Green in
honor of the Knights of the Garter. |
| He had various improvements made to the royal apartments and also built a gallery for himself
between the Salt Tower and the Lanthorn Tower. |
| In 1503 Henry VII's wife, Elizabeth of York, came to the tower to give birth to their 7th
child. Both mother and child died within a few days. Her body lay in state in St.
John's Chapel in the White Tower before being buried in Westminster Abbey. |
